Zion National Park, Utah, USA

Both me and my wife had been in Zion National Park before, just not together. We had booked accommodation at the Zion Lodge which allowed us to go into the park with our car. With all the parts we wanted to see we had booked two nights and thus had a full day to explore this fabulous national park.

Following the road out of the park to the Eastern exit was truly amazing. On the way back from our short road trip we came through Zion again.

The lines on Checkerboard Mesa

Getting really close to the most famous landmark in Zion National Park, Utah, USA. The lines on Checkerboard Mesa are clearly visible and extremely intriguing.

The horizontal lines are caused by cross-bedding, a remnant of ancient sand dunes. The vertical and sub-vertical lines formed by the contraction and expansion of the sandstone caused by temperature changes, freezing and thawing cycles, in combination with wetting and drying.
