Iceland, Europe (2016)

In August of 2016 I went on a trip to Iceland with my youngest son. We started in Reykjavik and circled the whole island clockwise in two weeks time.

After exploring the city of Reykjavik we travelled North towards Húsavík passing through amazing nature with waterfalls and craters. On a whale watching trip in Húsavík we managed to see several humpback whales. Other highlights were iconic waterfalls like Litlanesfoss, Selfoss, Godafoss and Dettifoss.

Following dirt road 939 we crossed towards the East side and entered glacier territory. A zodiac trip on Lake Jökulsárlón made us witness ice breaking off the glaciers and ending up on Diamond Beach.

Further towards the South we took a 4x4 bus excursion inland along the F206 road. We had some nice hikes and got to see the Lakagígar craters. Here too the landscape was dotted with beautiful waterfalls.

We closed off the trip with a visit to waterfalls Seljafoss and Gulfoss followed by the geothermal area containing geysers.

Magical sunset

After a clouded afternoon the weather cleared up just before sunset and we were enjoying the spectacle of dark clouds moving away while the sun peeked through.

Quite the magical experience that can now be created on your own wall.

From under the lava fields

I have always been mesmerized by waterfalls and can watch them for hours. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls streaming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field. It is near another waterfall called Barnafoss.

Amazing canyons near Húsavík

Driving towards Húsavík through some incredible nature. We took some time to admire this amazing canyon. No time though to hike down and walk over that small bridge.

Sheep enjoying the sun

While travelling through Iceland one cannot miss the sheer amount of sheep. Here I witnessed a small family enjoying the sun.

Great view from above

One of the more spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It took us some effort to get there but it was really worth it.

Huge basalt rocks

Remnants of an old volcano crater. It was a bit out of our way but the sight was really amazing.

Amazing waterfall

It took a long hike upwards to be able to view Litlanesfoss, an amazing waterfall lying in between huge basalt rocks. Once there we were rewarded with a fantastic view.

A milky Folaldafoss

We found this waterfall by accident as we stopped for a brief break along the 939 dirt road. It took a bit of climbing but the reward was truly amazing.

Wild Icelandic horses

Wild Icelandic horses roam around freely everywhere in Iceland. It's a beautiful sight to see these awesome animals.

Nicely sculptured

A zodiac trip on Lake Jökulsárlón allowed us to view some amazing icebergs. As it was a clouded day the blue in the ice really stood out.

Iceberg with a gate

When the ice breaks off a glacier it travels towards the ocean where it sometimes ends up on Diamond Beach. We felt lucky to be able to see this gorgeous ice rock.

Majestic Svartifoss

Another day, another waterfall. For this one we had to walk quite a bit but we managed to be able to get to the base of the waterfall. Amazing feeling to see what nature can do!

Beautiful Fagrifoss

Fagrifoss is a waterfall that cannot easily be reached. A 4x4 bus brought us here and the view was amazing.

Perfect view on the Lakagígar crater ridge

After a long and tedious hike up the mountain we had this rewarding view on this ridge of craters.

More like a waterslide

I felt lucky to have found this unnamed 'waterfall' while at a stop on our bus tour. I felt tempted to slide down.

Getting behind Seljalandsfoss

I have always wanted to walk behind a waterfall and Iceland is the place where that can be done. Very slippery though!

Very powerful eruption

It was a lot of fun waiting for geyser Strokkur to erupt, but the result was very rewarding.

A rainbow under dark clouds

It took a long time waiting for some sun to shine through the dark clouds, but the resulting rainbow is what I wanted to see. I was not disappointed.
