Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA

Canyonlands National Park in Utah, USA is huge, so huge that we could not see everything. We only had roughly half a day to visit this park so we decided to restrict ourselves to the Island in the Sky district. Most of the highlights in this area gave us a really good impression though. Astonishing to see how different this national park was in comparison with others in the area.

Whale Rock

Looking at Whale Rock in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. I would have loved to climb it but we did not have enough time to do so.

Surfacing above Upheaval Dome, Whale Rock is a unique natural feature on the western end of a magnificent mesa in Canyonlands National Park known as the Island in the Sky.

Aztec Butte

Aztec Butte in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. Basically just a bump in an otherwise flat area, but we loved looking at it.

Aztec Butte is a sandstone summit, elevation 1.924 metres, located in the 'Island in the Sky' district. It is composed of white cross-bedded Navajo Sandstone, which is the remains of wind-borne sand dunes deposited approximately 170 million years ago during the Jurassic Period. It resembles the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico, which was built by the Aztecs.

The Green River Overlook

Admiring the view at the Green River Overlook in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.

The Green River Overlook is at the end of the paved road in the 'Island in the Sky' District. The point at an elevation of 2.000 metres gives viewers an excellent perspective of the canyon within a cayon geology that makes the Island District so unique. The Green River can easily be seen meandering through the expansive Soda Springs Basin.

Buck Canyon Overlook

Standing at the Buck Canyon Overlook in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. We enjoyed the sweeping vistas to the west and across the Colorado River canyon. Pretty colours and great scenery!

Dead trees everywhere

Given the intense heat in this part of the US, it's not surprising that there are dead trees everywhere. This is one nice looking example at Buck Canyon Overlook in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.

Torned apart

A spectacular overview of the vastness of this park at Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. It looked like someone took the landscape from both sides and torned it apart, causing gaping canyons.

This certainly is a Grand View

This certainly is a Grand View' is what we said to one another when we arrived at Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.

Grand View Point lies at the southernmost end of the Island in the Sky scenic drive. From here, you can see across miles of corrugated canyons, the White Rim four-wheel-drive road, features in The Maze and The Needles, and distant mountains. A short, paved sidewalk leads to a spectacular viewpoint.

Some serious erosion

Some serious erosion can be seen at Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. You can see for miles into the distance and admire the remarkable lower canyon formations carved into the earth's surface after millions of years of erosion.

There is beauty in this

Basically nothing more than pure destruction, but there is beauty in this view at Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. Hard to imagine that this process of erosion started long before humans walked the Earth.

Some of the remains

Some of the remains are still standing after millions of years of erosion. Awesome view at Grand View Point in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.
