Terschelling, The Netherlands (2021)

Still restricted in our travel destinations we chose to visit another one of the Wadden islands in the north of The Netherlands. The island can be reached by car using the ferry leaving from the city of Harlingen in the province of Friesland. Overall we were  lucky with the weather and had some lovely walks in the dunes.

In 2015, nature reserve De Boschplaat on Terschelling was awarded the Dark Sky Park designation by the International Dark Sky organization IDA. It was pretty cold when we visited the area but were able to make some nice shots of the Milky Way.

All photo's can be purchased on various materials through my shop on artheroes.com.

Below are all the photos related to this travel experience including the relevant link to the shop.

Fishing boat HA-43

On deck of the ferry that will bring us to the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. Waiting until we were leaving we enjoyed the many fishing boats around us, like fishing boat HA-43 here in the harbour of the city of Harlingen.

Another sailboat returning

Just after the ferry left we passed the harbour of the city of Harlingen in the Netherlands. We were amazed by the large number of historic sailboats returning to the harbour. And there were so many more docked along the quays.

There's a lot of them

While sitting outside on the ferry to the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands we saw some beautiful ships sailing by. Apparently it was a great day for sailing. There's a lot of them!

Three sails up

Passing another three-masted boat on the Wadden Sea on our way to the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. The backlight provided by the sun in these hazy conditions made this a beautiful view.

Fairytale garden

We were going for a walk in the dunes on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. We loved passing this fairytale garden, belonging to a villa in an outer area of the town of West-Terschelling where we parked our car.

Small lake in the dunes

The dunes on the island of Terschelling are not all just sand. During a walk we came upon this small lake in the dunes and we sat a while on the bench, taking in the serenity.

Let's go see something more

After a pretty tiring hike in the dunes we ended up at these stairs. Obviously we decided to go up to see something more of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. It provided a nice view of the town of West-Terschelling and the extensive beach.

Bright yellow flowers

Even on this somewhat hazy day on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands, nature was showing off. These bright yellow flowers can seen everywhere in the dunes.

A covered wagon on the beach

Despite the covid measures and the less than ideal weather circumstances there were still tourists taking a ride in a horse-drawn covered wagon on the beach of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands.

Milky Way in the Netherlands

I did not expect the Milky Way to be visible at all, but the Dark Sky Park on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands did not disappoint. Though it wasn't as bright as we experienced in the southern hemisphere we got a look.

Ghosts & the Milky Way

I tried to see what would happen if I changed location while the lens of the camera was open. The result is that I appear twice in the image. Pretty cool! Had a great time in the Dark Sky Park on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands.

The world turns

Playing with my lens ball while resting dsring a walk on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. I find it always amazing how the world turns looking through this lens.

Strong horses

While resting a bit during our walk in the dune area of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands we saw these strong horses pulling a covered wagon carrying some tourists.

The empty path before us

The empty path before us while walking in the direction of the dunes on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. We loved walking in these wide open spaces with no-one else around.

Cute cloud

Walking around in the dunes of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. Never forget to look up now and then as you never know what you might see. Like this cute cloud for instance, closely resembling a heart.

Amazing sand dunes

After a lenghty walk we reached the amazing sand dunes in the northern part of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. From this distance they do not seem all that high but looks are deceiving I found out while climbing the dunes.

Pristine dunes

On my way up climbing the dunes in the northern part of the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. It definitely looked a lot easier when I started this, but the pristine dunes made it all worthwhile.

Northern view

It was a pretty hefty climb up the dunes to get to experience this beautiful view. Looking in a northerly direction over the Wadden Sea on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands.

Just birds on the beach

Even though the weather was quite nice there were just birds on the beach. Great view here from the top of one of the dunes on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands.

Scaring the burglars

A sunny last morning on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. Walking around in the town of West-Terschelling and admiring the ancient houses in the centre. I suppose this old cannon should scare the burglars away.

Theatre & cinema West-End

We loved this small theatre in the town of West-Terschelling on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. Located on the west side of the island the name 'West-End' is well chosen.

Guiding the ferry

After a few wonderful days on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands we took the ferry back to the mainland. As the Wadden Sea is very shallow, the fairway can only be navigated safely by following the buoys guiding the ferry.
