Zeeland, The Netherlands (2021)

Still deep in the covid pandemic we continued to discover the Netherlands by visiting small historic cities. This time we visited two of them on a day trip to the province of Zeeland in the south of the Netherlands. We started the day by going to the city of Veere. Even though it is close to where I was born I only went there as a child with my parents. Second city was the city of Zierikzee which I had passed many times but never took the time for a decent visit.

All photo's can be purchased on various materials through my shop on artheroes.com.

Below are all the photos related to this travel experience including the relevant link to the shop.

Living opposite the big church

Living opposite the big church in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. We loved walking through this historic street on our way to the city centre.

Number 51

Almost all houses in the historic city of Veere in the Netherlands are cute and unique. We really loved number 51 in this particular street we were on.

Cisterne

It was really nice to see a historic cisterne in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. A cistern (from Middle English cisterne) is a waterproof receptacle for holding liquids, usually water. Cisterns were often built to catch and store rainwater. Cisterns are distinguished from wells by their waterproof linings.

Town hall details

The town hall in the city of Veere in the Netherlands is a true piece of art. The town hall of Veere was built between 1474 and 1517 by order of Hendrik IV van Borsele. For centuries, the inhabitants of Veere and the surrounding villages were governed from the town hall.

Through the red door

We really wondered what was behind the red door. Turned out it was a restaurant. One of the many nice surprises in the city of Veere in the Netherlands.

A small red door

A small red door in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. Not really much to tell about this door except that we just liked it.

Quiet back street

We really liked this quiet back street in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. Except for a few minor modernisations the street still breathes the atmosphere of the middle ages.

Another back street

Another back street in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. It's not hard to imagine how horses and carriages used this street in the middle ages.

Detailed side of the big church

The church in the city of Veere in the Netherlands is big, too big to even fit on a picture. But we truly loved this detailed side of the big church.

The arch through the wall

We really like the small arch through the wall behind the big church in the city of Veere in the Netherlands. It's a convenient way for people living behind the wall to get to the church.

Once the longest bridge in Europe

The Zeelandbrug was once the longest bridge in Europe. Being born in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands I have seen this bridge being built. Unfortunately in those days they did not foresee the enormous growth in traffic so with only two lanes it cannot really handle the current flow of tourists.

Artistic boardwalk

Having a moment on this artistic boardwalk in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. All while having a short stop to watch the longest bridge in the Netherlands.

A bride and groom getting ready

The city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands is a lovely decor for a wedding photo shoot. While having a drink, we loved watching a bride and groom getting ready on one of the historic bridges.

Going towards the city

Going towards the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. To reach the historic inner city we needed to cross a few bridges and passed some gates, but it was definitely worthwhile going here.

And we're in!

And we're in, through the gateway arch we had to pass to get to the inner city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. It was amazing to see how well most of these historic places have been maintained.

Colourful mix of boats

We loved this colourful mix of boats inside the inner harbour of the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. Without the tourists most of them were either out of business or simply had nothing to do. Kind of sad really.

Harbour reflections

Lovely reflections on the inner harbour in the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. We were absolutely taken by this view.

Hello summer

A bunch of small 'Hello summer' buckets we noticed in a shop in the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. Since the mask rules were lifted inside stores we did some shopping.

Local art gallery

We really liked this local art gallery in the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. That is, we liked the building it was located in as we did not visit it inside.

Very fancy house

We loved this very fancy house in the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. The history goes back a few hundred years when this city, like many others, was thriving on trade.

Towards the bridge

Walking along the inner harbor and towards the bridge in the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. The greatest advantage of the covid pandemic was that cities like these were so nice and quiet without mass tourism.

Another entry gate

Another entry gate to the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands, not to be used by cars. We loved the historic feel of this place and could easily picture horse-drawn carriages going through those gates.

Bridges connected

So many waterways criss-cross through the city of Zierikzee in the Netherlands. This means many bridges are required, sometimes almost connected to one another.
