Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands

The Marquesas Islands are a part of French Polynesia but they are far away from everything else. It took our cruise ship five full days at sea from Hawai'i to reach the island of Nuku Hiva. It made the experience even more special.

Let's stay here permanently

Walking around on a beach near the small village of Ho'oumi on the island of Nuku Hiva, part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. In these settings we regularly have the feeling of staying here permanently. Great weather, friendly people, what more would we want?

Colourful boat on the beach

Spending time at this beach near the small village of Ho'oumi on the island of Nuku Hiva, part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. We loved this colourful boat on the beach.

The natural harbour of Taiohae

The natural harbour of Taiohae looks awesome from up on the mountain. The harbour provides great access for larger ships to reach the island of Nuku Hiva, one of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.

Entering the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Taiohae

Cathedral might be a bit of an overstretch in the case of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. It is definitely a religious place but I wouldn't call it a cathedral. It is a beautiful place to visit though.

Backyard of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Taiohae

Walking around in the backyard of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the town of Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. Lots of details to admire.

I looked everywhere but have not been able to identify this flower. But it sure looked very pretty. Saw these gorgeous white flowers while exploring the site around Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the town of Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.

Plumeria tree

One of our favourite flowers on the Plumeria tree. There is some beautiful nature to enjoy at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the town of Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.

Mountains surrounding Taiohae

Mythical aliens maybe

Temehea Tohua is an ancient ceremonial and meeting site in the town of Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. There is a legend that tells of mythical aliens, but Temehea Tohua is the ancestral home of Queen Vaekehu who was considered to be the last queen or chieftainess of the Taiohae. The site now contains a number of carved stones brought from around the Pacific for the First Marquesan International Art Festival. A Tohua was a large rectangular plaza with flat areas surrounded by platforms and was used for both ceremonial and meeting purposes.

Leaving a trail in the Taiohae Bay

Leaving a trail in the Taiohae Bay after leaving the island of Nuku Hiva, part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. We realised that not a lot of people have visited here since it's such a remote place.

It never gets boring

It never gets boring looking at a beautiful sunset. When the sky is not totally clear it all depends on the cloud formations. We loved this sunset an hour after we had left the island of Nuku Hiva. Got to enjoy this one on the cruise ship Norwegian Jewel sailing the Pacific Ocean.
