Amalfi Coast, Italy, Europe

The Amalfi Coast was the actual goal of this road trip and as far as we got in Italy. Ever since I saw the colourful pictures of the small towns on this famous coast I wanted to go there. Now that I went there I can safely say I will never go there again and I cannot recommend it. The famous Amalfi Drive is horrible to drive. Too narrow, too much traffic and the smell of diesel fumes caused by the many buses is overwhelming. Do not get fooled by the promise of lemon-scented beauty. It's not there, trust me. The towns are pretty though but only if you can find a decent parking space they can be admired. Unfortunately we had to skip a few towns as there was simply nowhere to park the car.

Torre Normanna is a restaurant now

Sometimes ruins are put to good use, like turning them into a restaurant. That is exactly what they did with Torre Normanna in the town of Maiori on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Higher and higher

Higher and higher they went in the town of Maiori on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The only way to build extra houses is to go upwards.

Amalfi close-up

A nice close-up of the stacked housing in the town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. People living here made efficient use of the limited space available for building, making towns like this very compact. Navigating the narrow streets is a challenge though.

Sunshine on Amalfi

Some sunshine on the town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It was touch and go for a while but ultimately the sun came out and it makes the town look so much prettier.

It sure is pretty

Visiting the town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Even though the tourist season had not started yet it was extremely busy, so busy that we had to park way outside of the centre. It turned out to be a good thing though as the views from here were much better. It sure is pretty!

Built against the cliffs

Houses built against the cliffs makes looking at these towns definitely worthwhile, especially when they are as colourful as here in the town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Weatherwise it was not the best day but ultimately we got some sun which increased the prettiness of it all.

The famous Amalfi drive

Strada statale 163 Amalfitana, also known as the famous Amalfi drive along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Lots of curves, not too wide and extremely busy with various kinds of traffic. We have no regrets driving it but will definitely not do it again.

A flowering cactus

There are flowers all over the place but we did not expect to see a flowering cactus while driving along the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Old ruins everywhere

Old ruins can be seen everywhere on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Apparently it is customary not to tear down houses that are no longer in use.

Vietri sul Mare in the distance

The town of Vietri sul Mare in the distance as seen from the road along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Such idyllic views can be experienced everywhere and each town is more beautiful than the one before.

Vietri sul Mare from above

After a day trip on the Amalfi Coast in Italy we stopped at this scenic viewpoint to look at the town of Vietri sul Mare. The weather could have been a bit better but luckily it didn't rain.

Living on the edge

People sure like to live on the edge in the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The view from the living room and balcony must be magnificent, but I'm not sure I would dare to live there.

They made it really nice

Beautiful facades everywhere you walk in the centre of the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The town is known for its ceramic art and it's used wherever they can. It makes the town really look nice.

Flower fish

Walking around and shopping in the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Everywhere we went we saw colourful flower pots, in this case in the form of fish.

Impressive rocks in the Tyrrhenian sea

While strolling around on a beautiful and sunny day we saw these impressive rocks in the Tyrrhenian sea near the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. So idyllic!

Waiting for tourists to come

Lots of beach chairs and umbrellas waiting for tourists to come in the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The weather was pretty nice but there were hardly any tourists to be found. Personally I would hate to spend time on a beach like this. Too crowded, even without people.

Cute beach houses

We loved these cute beach houses in the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Lovely changing rooms for anyone that wants go enjoy the beach.

There's always someone higher

There's always someone higher in the town of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It's all about money, the more you have of it, the higher up you can go and the more luxureous the houses get. It does look very pretty though.
