After having been to Antarctica in 2025 we stumbled on a cruise that would bring us to Iceland and Greenland. I had been on Iceland before, but my wife hadn't and the both of us really got enthusiastic about Greenland. The cruise conveniently left from Hamburg so we could drive there. The four ports in Iceland were well chosen and we managed to see quite some fantastic nature. But Greenland really made this trip absolutely worthwhile, especially as the cruise ship went all the way north inside the arctic circle. The remoteness, the high mountain ranges, the insane amount and size of icebergs made this part of our journey truly mesmerising.

After arriving at the canyon we looked straight down and had this amazing view.

The Rainbow Street (officially named Ranagata) is a vibrant, painted stone walkway leading directly up to the iconic light-blue wooden church. It was created as a community project in 2016 by local residents and town employees who painted the path in rainbow colors.
Loved this small rock in Blue Lake near the town of Reykjahlíð in Iceland. It is located just off the main road near the local geothermal infrastructure. Bathing or swimming is not permitted here because it is an industrial geothermal runoff/feature near the power station.

Hverir (also known as Námaskarð or Hverarönd) is a surreal, hyper-active geothermal field located at the base of the Námafjall mountain, just a short drive east of Reykjahlíð near Lake Mývatn. It is famous for its bright ochre-red landscape, roiling gray mud pots and high-pressure steam vents that release a heavy, unmistakable rotten-egg scent of sulfur gas. The sulfur gases break down the surrounding basalt rock into fine, powdery clay. Rain and geothermal groundwater mix with this clay to create thick, gray mud pots (fumaroles) that violently pop and burp at temperatures exceeding 80° to 100° Celcius.

The rugged rocks are the result of erosion. A massive lava lake flowed over a wet marshland. As the water boiled underneath, steam trapped in columns hardened the lava from within. When the top crust eventually drained away, it left behind these towering, hollow black pillars and sweeping arches.
The striking, pale white or grayish coating covering the volcanic rocks at Dimmuborgir is primarily woolly fringe-moss, mostly called white moss.

Standing right in the middle of the bridge gives you an incredible, unobstructed view looking directly down into the Geitafoss chute. It lets you see the natural stone arch and the basalt canyon walls pop visually.
Geitafoss is the smaller, quieter sibling to Goðafoss in Iceland, located just about 200 meters downstream on the very same Skjálfandafljót river. Rather than a broad drop, the river tightens into a churning, forceful chute right near the pedestrian bridge. It is tight, loud, and incredibly dramatic up close.

The rugged mountains in the south of Greenland represent some of the most dramatic alpine terrain in the Arctic. We were travelling on the cruise ship AIDAluna and navigated south along the western coastline from the Davis Strait into the fjords around Nanortalik. It treated us to a breathtaking arena of sheer granite walls, spire-like peaks, and cascading glaciers. The region’s landscape is so vertical and imposing that it has earned the nickname "The Arctic Patagonia".
The little blue shed numbered 1224 sitting right on the edge of the Nanortalik harbour is one of the most famous, highly photographed focal points for cruise passengers visiting southern Greenland. When a massive vessel like the AIDA cruise ship AIDAluna anchors out in the deep waters of the fjord, it creates a striking visual contrast: a tiny, vibrant Arctic utility shed standing in the foreground, juxtaposed against a towering, multi-deck modern cruise liner anchored in the harbour behind it.
The only gas pump in Nanortalik, Greenland, is operated by Polaroil, the state-owned fuel company responsible for the energy supply across Greenland's remote towns and settlements. Located directly alongside the harbour, this single, essential refueling station serves dual duties: providing petrol and diesel for the town's small number of road vehicles and supplying crucial fuel to local fishing boats, expedition ribs, and transatlantic sailing yachts.
Historically, the vibrant colours of the buildings in Nanortalik and throughout Greenland served a highly functional, civic purpose. Long before modern maps, a strict color-coding system helped residents instantly identify the function of public buildings from a distance. Red indicated churches, school houses and buildings tied to religion or education. We loved the yellow wooden uprights.

Massive freshwater icebergs and ocean pack ice drift down from the east coast, creating vibrant blue ice formations against green hills. This one was shining bright like a diamond. Ice presence changes daily with wind and currents.

An absolutely unforgettable moment near Greenland! Watching this pretty special sunset over the endless expanse of the Labrador Sea from the deck of the cruise ship AIDAluna was truly a great experience. Because of the high latitude in the Arctic regions, the sun follows a low trajectory relative to the horizon, which often results in incredibly long, slow, and vibrant color displays that stretch across the sky.

Bæjarfoss is the lowest and first waterfall you reach on the Dynjandi Fjallfoss Trail in the Westfjords of Iceland. It was just a short, few-minute walk from the main parking area and marks the start of an 800 meter steady uphill climb that passes six other named waterfalls before reaching the massive Dynjandi at the top.
Well on my way to Strompgljúfrafoss in the distance with Dynjandi itself a little further up. The path is well-fenced and structured with rocky steps to protect the surrounding fragile vegetation.
Dynjandi is actually the grand finale of a series of seven distinct waterfalls. While I hiked up, I already passed a few smaller cascades: Bæjarfoss, Hundafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss and Göngumannafoss with Strompgljúfrafoss and Hæstahjallafoss still to follow.
The Dynjandi waterfall, widely regarded as the jewel of the Westfjords Region of Iceland, is famous for its unique bridal veil shape. The massive waterfall drops 100 meters, starting at a width of 30 meters at the top and fanning out beautifully to 60 meters wide at its base. The walk up was a short but steep uphill climb that took me roughly 15 to 30 minutes to reach the main viewpoint.
Strompgljúfrafoss is the second-highest waterfall in the iconic Dynjandi (Fjallfoss) waterfall series located in Iceland’s remote Westfjords. Dropping over 20 meters into a dramatic canyon, it is the second cascade you encounter from the top when going down the Dynjandi Fjallfoss Trail.
While sailing away from Ísafjörður in Iceland we passed the cruise ship Queen Mary 2 on the Northern Atlantic Ocean which was, like us, en route to Reykjavik.
Earlier in the year we had travelled on the Queen Mary 2 for 57 days and we're glad we don't ever have to be on it again. It's one of the dirtiest ships out there. The cruise ship AIDAluna we are travelling on now is many, many times better.
While driving towards Geysir and Gullfoss in Iceland, we stopped at this winding side road to admire the unspoilt mountain views. The overcast sky gave it quite a dramatic look.

Strokkur (which translates to "The Churn" in Icelandic) is a fountain-type geyser. It is highly celebrated globally because it is one of the only natural geysers on Earth that erupts with absolute predictability and frequency. It erupts every 4 to 10 minutes and launches water 15 to 20 meters high. Every explosive spray lasts only a few seconds though.
The Haukadalur Valley in southwest Iceland features active steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and the famous Strokkur geyser along the Golden Circle route. Small, hissing openings release high-temperature steam across the mineral-streaked landscape. Boiling clay and mineral deposits bubble in small, colorful pools.
A great overview of Gullfoss, the famous two-tiered waterfall located on the Hvítá river in south-west Iceland. The total drop is 32 meters, split into an 11-meter upper drop and a 21-meter lower plunge. The name translates to "Golden Falls" because sunlight reflecting off the glacial sediment often gives the water a golden hue which wasn't the case here as it was raining heavily.
The Hvítá River plunges 32 meters in two cascading stages into the deep Gullfossgjúfur canyon at Gullfoss, an amazing waterfall in Iceland. This second steep plunge measures 21 meters in height. The surrounding dark basalt canyon walls rise up to 70 meters high.
